King Christian

Born in 1577 into the House of Oldenburg, Christian IV inherited a Denmark-Norway that stood as the dominant power of the Baltic. His early reign was defined by unprecedented prosperity and a visionary obsession with modernization. A true polymath, Christian spoke five languages and possessed a deep understanding of mathematics and architecture. This passion transformed his kingdom; he founded new cities and commissioned iconic fortresses and palaces that still define the Danish landscape today. Christian’s rise as a regional heavyweight was solidified during the Kalmar War (1611–1613), where his aggressive leadership forced Sweden to recognize Danish supremacy. This victory secured the immense wealth of the Sound Dues—tolls collected from ships entering the Baltic—which he utilized to construct one of Europe’s most formidable navies. However, his decision to intervene in the Thirty Years' War in 1625 served as a fateful turning point of his career. Seeking to protect the Protestant cause and expand his influence in Northern Germany, he led his armies south in a bold bid for continental power. This culminated in 1626 at the Battle of Lutter. Despite his personal bravery, Christian's forces were decimated by the veteran troops of Count Tilly. The defeat shattered his dreams of German hegemony and forced him into a defensive struggle that would haunt the remainder of his reign. Nevertheless, his resilience remained legendary. Even in his late sixties, during a naval battle against the Swedes, he was struck by shrapnel that cost him the sight in one eye. Refusing to leave the deck, he continued to command through the blood and smoke, becoming a permanent symbol of Danish defiance. He died in 1648 at Rosenborg Castle, leaving behind a kingdom that, while militarily diminished, was culturally and architecturally reborn. In Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition, King Christian is a lively and joyous character full of energy. Although he is optimistic to the point of denial and can’t stop talking about Vikings, he also is good-hearted and friendly to his allies. His expensive hobbies frequently spiral into dangerous adventures, funded by his Customs House tolls and fought by an army of tin soldiers.
