Sámi
The Sámi are the indigenous people of Sápmi, a region formerly known as Lapland, spanning northern Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia. Their culture is deeply tied to the environment, featuring over nine distinct dialects and a vocabulary with more than 200 words for snow and ice. Historically nomadic, the Sámi lived in conical tents while practicing large-scale reindeer herding, coastal fishing, and fur trapping. Their rich heritage includes ‘duodji’ handicrafts and the ‘joik’, an ancient vocal tradition reflecting people, animals, or nature. In the 17th century, the Sámi began a gradual transition from traditional Shamanism to Christianity under increasing outside pressure.
