How to use it

The Companion is a heavy hand cavalry unit. It is available in the Commerce Age at the Trading Post to anyone who has allied with the House of Vasa by building a Trading Post on one of their palaces. Companions are sturdy cavalrymen who inflict siege damage with their war hammer.

History

The House of Vasa ruled Sweden and much of Poland during the 16th and 17th centuries, inheriting a medieval "knight and squire" company system. In this structure, the companion or comrade (towarzysz) was typically a nobleman who raised and led a company of retainers (poczet). Some European armies tried to mimic the Polish company system, though mostly limited to light cavalry regiments. Before the rise of the Winged Hussars, Polish knights wore plate or segmented "anima" style armor. While expert in the lance charge, these knights specialized in defeating heavily armored opponents like the Teutonic Knights. To counter thick plate, they favored crushing weapons such as flanged maces and the “obuch” war hammer.
