History
The Inuit, indigenous to the Arctic regions of Alaska, Canada, and Greenland, descended from the Thule people, who migrated eastward from Alaska around 1000 CE, replacing the Dorset culture. Their preferred autonym is Inuit – meaning 'the people’ – instead of the discontinued 'Eskimo’, an offensive term imposed by neighboring tribes and colonizers. The Inuit's domed snow house, the 'igloo,' is an ingenious construction. Snow blocks provide insulation and internal lamp heat creates an ice glaze that seals the structure, keeping the interior above freezing. European contact began with Norse settlers in 10th-century Greenland. From the 16th century, interactions with European whalers and fishermen ranged from trade to conflict. A lasting yet complex relationship developed between the Greenlandic Inuit and the Danes, solidified by Danish colonization in the 18th century, a tie that persists today.
