How to use it
The Folwark is a unique Polish farming building available from the start. It replaces the Mill and supports 5 gatherers as well as 10 population slots. In the second age, each Folwark can be individually upgraded to a specialization of your choice for a wood cost. These specializations variably allow you to unlock Livestock herding, extended military training or more farming slots. It is possible to downgrade and upgrade every Folwark. The standard Folwark is also able to train a few military units for defense or early surprise attacks. Finally, some reinforcements from the Polish Home City become stronger based on your total number of Folwarks.
History
The economy of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth primarily relied on the export of grains produced by agricultural estates called Folwarks. Originally created by Monasteries, these estates were gradually taken over by nobles, who forced peasants to work the fields. While this type of feudalism was in decline in 15th century Western Europe, Eastern Europe adopted a more radical phase of serfdom. Grain exports from the ports of Gdańsk and Elbląg initially created great profits all across Europe. However, in the 17th century this excessive supply of grain caused revenues to fall. Political instability and the nobility’s refusal to modernize effectively prevented industrialization in Poland-Lithuania. Nevertheless, the Folwark system legally continued to exist until the 20th century.
