How to use it
The Retainer is a Polish heavy hand cavalry unit available at the Stable and Folwark starting in the Commerce Age. Though technically heavy cavalry, their anti-cavalry bonus and vulnerability to massed fire give them a light cavalry feel. Their low resource and population costs make them ideal for massing to raid or to distract from high-value units like Winged Hussars.
History
Historically, the Polish-Lithuanian cavalry followed a medieval "knight and squire" system: A noble officer (towarzysz) led a company (poczet) of retainers. This retinue was often composed of peasants who, due to chronic funding shortages, were typically equipped lighter than their officers. This system was used in all formations, from the elite Winged Hussars and Pancerni to light Cossack or Tatar units. Despite the prestige of the Winged Hussars, Retainers formed the bulk of the Commonwealth's cavalry force, granting the Polish-Lithuanian army the highest cavalry-to-infantry ratio in 16th-century Europe.

How this is worked out
Each hit: damage × every multiplier that matches the target's types × (1 − the target's resist to that damage). Two ranged units trade shots; against a melee-only unit the better of ranged and melee is used. Damage per second = hit ÷ seconds between attacks.
Armies bought with the same resources fight by Lanchester's square law: strength = (resources ÷ unit cost)² × damage per second × hit points. The edge is the square root of the strength ratio. All matchups.
