History

The House of Stuart ruled Scotland from 1371 and traces its origins to the hereditary office of High Steward. In 1603 James VI of Scotland created the union of the crowns by inheriting the English throne. The following Stuart reigns were defined by great upheaval, including the execution of King Charles I. In the bloody Wars of the Three Kingdoms, the Stuarts’ Royalists drew fierce support from the Highland Clansmen. Their legendary Highland Charge fueled the Jacobite risings, a series of rebellions aiming to restore the exiled Stuart dynasty. This era of conflict ended with the defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. The subsequent severe crackdown on the Highland clan system resulted in a significant Scottish diaspora, extending their cultural and political reach across Europe and the Americas.
