How to use it

The Soldado replaces the Musketeer and is unique to the Mexicans. It is available starting in the Commerce Age and, like the Musketeer, is effective against cavalry and shock infantry but weak against light infantry. Soldados are stronger and have a fast bayonet attack, but slower to train and take up two population slots rather than just one.

History

The Viceroyalty of New Spain equipped a professional force of fighting men to defend its territories against internal and external threats alike. These Soldados proved quite effective against most opponents due to their training and organization, but could be overwhelmed by sheer numbers, as often happened during the Mexican struggle for independence. After the nation’s emancipation from Spain, the new government saw fit to continue the maintenance of a professional military force, and Soldados formed the core of many Mexican armies for years to come.

Beats Soldado

How this is worked out

Each hit: damage × every multiplier that matches the target's types × (1 − the target's resist to that damage). Two ranged units trade shots; against a melee-only unit the better of ranged and melee is used. Damage per second = hit ÷ seconds between attacks.

Armies bought with the same resources fight by Lanchester's square law: strength = (resources ÷ unit cost)² × damage per second × hit points. Closing in: the side that shoots further fires while the other walks from that range to its own (melee: 0) at its walking speed without hitting back; the units lost on the way are taken off before the square law. The edge is how many times its spending the loser would need to draw. All matchups.
