How to use it
The Cranequinier is a heavy ranged cavalry mercenary available in the Commerce Age. These mounted, well-armored crossbowmen are initially stronger in hand combat to offset their slow reload time. With every defeated unit they can improve their range and attack rate up to three times. They are particularly effective against infantry, but vulnerable to massed volley fire and light ranged cavalry such as Dragoons.
History
Cranequiniers were mounted crossbowmen named after the cranequin, a winding device that enabled spanning a powerful crossbow while on horseback. While less common than mounted archers, they were highly valued as mobile skirmishers and reconnaissance troops in many European armies from the 14th to 16th centuries, particularly in Italy and France. As the reloading process on horseback still proved slow, Cranequiniers wore armor to defend themselves when forced into melee engagements. Like early Dragoons, these soldiers also acted as mounted infantry, who rode for mobility, but dismounted to fire. After the 16th century they continued to serve in elite ceremonial guards, such as the Imperial Austrian Arcieren Bodyguard.
