How to use it
The Fortified Wagon is an Artillery mercenary available in the Commerce Age. Packed with a lot of hitpoints and armor this unit can deflect some of the incoming damage from nearby allied units. Unlike most artillery, it is not suited to take down buildings, but primarily serves as a mobile shield used to support infantry with extra firepower and keep high-range units in check.
History
In 15th century Eastern Europe, the advent of gunpowder led to innovations in mobile fortifications. Russian Streltsy fired from behind moving walls called “Gulyay-gorod” (“wandering town”) while Bohemians, Poles and Cossacks utilized fortified wagons known as “Tabors”, often fitted with small “tarasnice” cannons. When linked, these wagons formed a Wagenburg (“Wagon Castle”), a wooden wall providing vital cover against cavalry charges and projectiles. Shielded by heavy timber, wagon crews operated with a decisive advantage, while firing upon exposed enemies. Though the advent of high-velocity field artillery eventually rendered these wooden walls obsolete by the late 17th century, the fortified wagon’s legacy as a mobile, protected artillery unit lives on in its spiritual successor, the modern tank.
