How to use it

The Gallowglass is a heavy hand infantry mercenary with high speed and area damage. They blend traits of the Rodelero and Doppelsöldner, but unlike the Landsknecht, can be hired as early as the Commerce Age.

History

The Gallowglasses (from the Irish 'gallóglaigh', meaning 'foreign warriors') were elite infantry mercenaries of Norse-Gaelic descent from the Scottish Isles. Beginning in 1259, they provided Irish clan chiefs with a reliable, heavily armored force against Norman invaders. Clad in a mail coat and a bascinet-style helm, their primary weapons were the great two-handed claymore sword and the sparth axe. These heavy shock troops, often supported by light infantry called 'kerns' carrying bows, became the backbone of the Irish military from the 13th to 16th centuries. Their service declined with the Tudor conquest of Ireland, though some Gallowglasses also fought abroad for armies like the Dutch Blue Guards and the French Scottish Guard.
