How to use it

The Piechur is a unique Polish ranged infantry unit that replaces the Skirmisher and is available at the Barracks starting in the Commerce Age. Unlike other skirmishers the Piechur counters all Infantry units at the expense of shorter range. The unit gains extra range through upgrades, but its low hitpoints require careful protection from enemy melee cavalry.

History

As the Polish-Lithuanian nobility viewed foot service as undignified, Polish infantry duties often fell to foreign mercenaries, primarily Scots, Germans, and highly valued Hungarian Hajduks. This bias was reinforced by a dominant equestrian culture, fostered by the necessity of countering constant raids from the Eurasian steppes. Domestic levies like the “piechota wybraniecka” were instead organized by land or housing counts, earning them the nicknames "field" or "smoke" infantry, while specialized Kurpie foresters provided expert marksman support. The Commonwealth ultimately struggled to modernize its infantry in time to preserve the state. The first truly modern Polish infantrymen did not appear until the Napoleonic era, fighting within the legions of the Duchy of Warsaw.

How this is worked out

Each hit: damage × every multiplier that matches the target's types × (1 − the target's resist to that damage). Two ranged units trade shots; against a melee-only unit the better of ranged and melee is used. Damage per second = hit ÷ seconds between attacks.

Armies bought with the same resources fight by Lanchester's square law: strength = (resources ÷ unit cost)² × damage per second × hit points. The edge is the square root of the strength ratio. All matchups.
