How to use it

The Falconet is an early artillery piece. Like most artillery pieces it has a long range and does a lot of damage, even damaging nearby units and buildings with area of effect damage. It is trained from the Artillery Foundry or may be sent from the Home City. Like all artillery pieces, it is expensive and takes up several population slots. Falconets are the first true artillery pieces you can generally expect to see in most games. Grenadiers are available earlier, but are often quickly eclipsed by the more powerful, longer-ranged Falconet. Only the Ottomans or Portuguese can field other artillery early.

History

Falconets were among the smallest artillery. They weighed about 280 pounds, had a six-foot barrel and used about a pound of powder to fire a one pound shot. Still, the small quantity of powder (relative to larger artillery pieces) was enough to make a properly braced Falconet fly back up to 10 yards when fired.

Counters, worked out

Armies of equal cost, base stats (no upgrades or cards). "Edge" = how many times the winner's spending the loser would need to draw. This unit hits an area, so one-on-one figures understate it against groups.

How this is worked out

Each hit: damage × every multiplier that matches the target's types × (1 − the target's resist to that damage). Two ranged units trade shots; against a melee-only unit the better of ranged and melee is used. Damage per second = hit ÷ seconds between attacks.

Armies bought with the same resources fight by Lanchester's square law: strength = (resources ÷ unit cost)² × damage per second × hit points. The edge is the square root of the strength ratio. All matchups.
