How to use it
Uhlans are a unique German cavalry unit with good speed who sacrifice higher hitpoints for a good attack, but have no range. Like most melee cavalry they rely on their speed to get close to enemy units or to flee battles they don't want to fight. Uhlans arrive with every Shipment from the Home City beyond the first Age, so expect a German player to have at least some military units early to defend their colony or rush enemies.
History
Uhlans grew out of Polish light cavalry used by the Prussians and from the Tartars that settled in Lithuania after their defeat by Tamerlane. These Tartars were - like their forefathers - an elite mounted cavalry. In the nineteenth century, Prussian cavalry from Poland were called uhlans, and before long light cavalry in general were referred to as uhlans. Uhlans wore a distinctive four-cornered hat, the czapka, which was tall and sometimes decorated with plumes, and a jacket called an ulanka. They were armed with lances, sabers and, later, pistols.

How this is worked out
Each hit: damage × every multiplier that matches the target's types × (1 − the target's resist to that damage). Two ranged units trade shots; against a melee-only unit the better of ranged and melee is used. Damage per second = hit ÷ seconds between attacks.
Armies bought with the same resources fight by Lanchester's square law: strength = (resources ÷ unit cost)² × damage per second × hit points. Closing in: the side that shoots further fires while the other walks from that range to its own (melee: 0) at its walking speed without hitting back; the units lost on the way are taken off before the square law. The edge is how many times its spending the loser would need to draw. All matchups.
