How to use it
The Winged Hussar is an elite heavy cavalryman unique to the Poles. Starting in the Commerce Age, he is available at the Stable for a high resource and population cost. Winged Hussars are swift lancers who counter infantry. Their deadly lance charge attack inflicts siege damage, bypassing traditional unit armors against ranged and hand damage. This attack also damages units directly behind the main target, making Winged Hussars particularly effective against tight formations.
History
While the very first hussar units from the Balkans originally carried shields and lances, the evolution of this troop type in most of Europe led to a lighter, saber-swinging type of cavalry. On the contrary, the hussars of Poland became heavier over time, instead of lighter. In formidable armor and with flamboyant, ominously rattling wings attached to them, these elite horsemen charged into battle striking fear into even the most hardened armies of the time. The Winged Hussars gained a reputation for defeating numerically superior armies, most notably in the Battles of Kircholm or Klushino against the Swedes and Russians. Though their biggest feat was the liberating and devastating charge against a huge Ottoman army laying siege to Vienna in 1683.

How this is worked out
Each hit: damage × every multiplier that matches the target's types × (1 − the target's resist to that damage). Two ranged units trade shots; against a melee-only unit the better of ranged and melee is used. Damage per second = hit ÷ seconds between attacks.
Armies bought with the same resources fight by Lanchester's square law: strength = (resources ÷ unit cost)² × damage per second × hit points. The edge is the square root of the strength ratio. All matchups.
